Welcome to the year 8 science coastal field studies
Our class project is the investigation of the Geology and Environment of Local Coastal Rock Platforms on the Central Coast of NSW
The NSW coast is an environmentally fragile area which is under increasing pressure from new residents, development, and more recently, climate change.
Each of our class teams will be studying a local beach area, compiling results here and reporting back our findings.

The educational objectives of our fieldwork project as per the Stage 4 Science Syllabus are listed below.

Outcome 4.9 A student describes the dynamic stucture of Earth.
Outcome 4.10 A student identifies factors affecting survival of organisms in an ecosystem.
Outcome 4.14 A student follows a sequence of instructions to undertake a firsthand investigation. Outcome 5.10 A student assesses human impacts on the interaction of biotic and abiotic features of the environment.
In respect of the field study specifically students will learn to:
4.8.2(b) - Describe features of living things and identify them using a simple key.
4.10(a) - Describe some adaptations of intertidal organisms (and coastal plants) to factors in their environment.
4.10(b) - Describe how producers, consumers, and decomposers are related in a food chain.
4.14 - Follow a sequence of instructions to undertake a firsthand investigation, of a transect to measure distribution and abundance.
4.9.6(c) - Learn to relate the formation of landforms to weathering, erosion and deposition.
5.10 - Describe some impacts of human activities on rock platforms and discuss one management strategy used to balance this activity and the needs of the environment.
